A Rose for Emily
by William Faulkner
When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, and the women, because they were always glad of a chance to see the inside of a house that had been shut up for thirty years.
She was a small, fat woman in black, with a face like a bud, which never seemed to open. She had not seen a man since her father’s death, and she had never married. The ladies all said that she was crazy, but we did not believe it at first.
We thought she was just a little strange, like the old people who are afraid of change. But as time passed, we began to think she was different from the rest of us.
She had no friends, and she kept to herself. The only person who ever came to visit her was the minister, who would bring her a book or some flowers once in a while.
But then, one day, a new man came to town. He was young and handsome, and he seemed to be interested in Miss Emily. We all watched him closely, hoping that he might finally make her happy.
But nothing happened. After a while, the man left town, and Miss Emily became more reclusive than ever.
Years passed, and we forgot about her. But one day, when the town was preparing for a new development, we found out something terrible.
In the basement of her house, we discovered a body — a man’s body, preserved in a strange way. And next to it, a single rose.
